Switzerland is home to many beautiful modern churches. These modern churches offer a wide variety of building structures. Even though most of them look nothing alike, all of them convey this sense of sacrality. This commonality leads to the question, "How do modern churches convey sacredness?". There is no right answer to this question. To come closer to the different aspects, I start with what makes churches unique. It is as Peter Böhm, a German architect, expresses it that in a church, the room itself is the function. The act of looking at the room transmits a feeling of one's existence. Moreover, the walls which are limiting succeed in creating a sense of eternity. Thereby, the size of a church is not of importance. Crucial is the presence a church creates. This presence is the result of the interplay of building materials, shapes, and light.
