Floating Buildings
While doing some research into the Transatlantic and Hanseatic trade this summer I visited Hamburg, Liverpool and Manchester and was captivated by the docklandscapes and how these long-gone hotspots of trade came into disuse. Badly damaged during WWII the sites became run-down and unappealing. But the three areas, the Speicherstadt in Hamburg, the Albert Docks in Liverpool and canals around Potato Wharf in Manchester survived and got redeveloped and thus the splendid brick buildings and iron bridges have risen phoenix-like to new glory; now providing homes for museums, galleries and concert halls, hotels, cafés and cutting-edge businesses. This photo series captures the beauty of profane buildings which seem to be floating through time and space and juxtaposes new designs with old architecture in three not dissimilar cityscapes.
